This project was created by Kelly Karst for the course “Digital Memories” at the CUNY Graduate School (Digital Humanities)
The site includes media curated from various archives and repositories that illustrate the memory of the existence of Gorgona as a vibrant town, and the individual memories of those who passed through it.
In going through the archives and repositories, it became clear that the narrative strongly favored a white, male view, with a few exceptions. This was particularly jarring as this demographic was likely in the minority in Gorgona. For a more nuanced and representative understanding of the history of the Panama Canal, we recommend:
